Davis Weather Stations and WeatherCat
WeatherCat is able to obtain data from the following weather station models from Davis Instruments:
- Vantage Vue
- Vantage Pro-2 product line, including the Weather Envoy and the (discontinued) WeatherLinkIP data-logger.
In order to connect your Macintosh to a Davis Vantage station (either the Vue or Vantage Pro-2 line) you need some sort of data logger. There are two possible choices:
- The USB data logger: WeatherLink USB Data Logger (Part #: 6510USB)
- The now-discontinued IP data logger: WeatherLinkIP™ for Vantage Stations (Part #: 06555)
The WeatherLinkIP ethernet data logger was discontinued sometime around the beginning of 2020, so for new installations you need to buy the USB WeatherLink.
Formerly there were separate versions of the USB data logger for Windows and Mac, and the dongle needed to be reprogrammed to switch between system types. There is now only one version of the USB logger.
Even if you intend to run WeatherCat software, you must use either the USB or IP data logger in order to physically connect your Macintosh to your Davis weather station. For the present, the Davis WeatherLink software is required for a number of tasks not yet supported by WeatherCat like adjusting the baseline values of a Davis Weather Envoy. The WeatherLink software is no longer packaged with the data logger hardware; you need to download it from WeatherLink.com (account required). Windows and Mac versions are available.
We have compiled a list of the trade-offs between the Davis USB and IP data loggers:
If you decide to go with the Davis USB data logger, you'll need to download the latest drivers for that USB interface. See Obtaining the latest drivers for use with Davis data loggers .
